“How Dr. Mary is Remarkable”: A Female Surgeon in the Civil War

Mary Edwards Walker was born in 1832 in Oswego, New York and received her M.D. from Syracuse Medical College in 1855.  She was one of the early women doctors in the United States.

Dr. Walker was one of the early women doctors in the United States.  The photograph of her medical degree gives evidence of her medical qualifications as a doctor.
